Munnar got its name from the three river
Madupetti, Nallathanni and Periavaru which flow through the town and submerge at a fair distance from the town of Munnar, and hence gets its name 'Moon-aar'. Most of the tea plantations in Munnar where planted by the Britishers in the late 19th century. And now a large part of it is undertaken by Kannan Devan corporation. Tourists are allows to walk through these plantations and explore the real natural beauty of Munnar. The Munnar town is divided in to two areas old Munnar and new Munnar. New Munnar houses the main bus stations and Hotels etc..
